This Special Report outlines the new HbA1c diagnostic thresholds for prediabetes and diabetes that came into effect on 1 July 2026. These changes support the earlier detection and treatment of type 2 diabetes (T2D) and align New Zealand with international standards. Approximately 34,500 additional people will now meet the diagnostic threshold for diabetes, and annual HbA1c recall testing will no longer be needed in the approximately 200,000 people who no longer meet the criteria for prediabetes. Practices are encouraged to focus on people aged < 60 years with a new diagnosis of diabetes who are not currently receiving diabetes management.
